Asylum was co founded in 1998 by Donal Gallagher and Gerrie O’Grady.

Our first production, a two-hander adaptation of Ionesco’s The Bald Prima Donna, directed by Ali Robertson, toured extensively in Ireland, before playing Edinburgh Fringe Festival to much critical and popular acclaim. We were subsequently invited to perform at the Theaterszene Europa Festival, Cologne, and were the first ever Irish company to be invited to the San Francisco International Absurdist Festival.

Now, Asylum is an award-winning theatre company that creates unusual theatre in unusual spaces with unusual people. We strive to create extraordinary acts of theatre and community; empowering others to join us in making great art. Our works spans locations from the sublime to the insane; from a disused bacon factory to an empty supermarket, a workhouse, a street, an entire town. Asylum do not have an infrastructure, making our extraordinary collaborative relationship with Once Off Productions essential.

Our work centres around paying attention; creating responsive work responsibly, sensitively and imaginatively.

Recent and future work includes:

Everything Must Go! by Aideen Wylde and Donal Gallagher 2022; The Big Chapel X by John Morton, Donal Gallagher and Medb Lambert 2019; The Local by Medb Lambert, Clare Monelly and Emma O’Grady 2023.

We are delighted to be current artists in residence at The Watergate Theatre 2024.
